DIR Floortime

DIR Floortime was developed by Dr. Stanley Greenspan. It is recognised as a leading evidenced based approach to help individuals with neurodevelopmental differences flourish.
Developmental, Individual-differences, & Relationship-based model (D.I.R.) provides a framework for understanding and promoting an individual’s development. It explains the critical role of social-emotional development starting at birth and continuing throughout the lifespan. The model highlights the power of relationships and emotional connections to fuel development. Through a deep understanding of the "D" and the "I" we can use the "R" to promote healthy development and to help every child and person reach their fullest potential by supporting children and their families. DIR uses the power of relationships and human connections to promote engagement, communication, positive behaviours, and thinking. The DIR Floortime approach is based on the fact that emotion is critical to the growth of the mind and brain. Following your child's lead also means following their emotions and supporting them to learn to work through a range of emotions.
The DIR model prides itself on coaching and therefore you as the parent are key to the intervention. The DIR model can be used at schools as a philosophy for interactions with learners which involves a respectful, playful, joyful and engaging process to develop skills through meaningful play opportunities.

“Every child wants to interact. They just might not be able to due to their unique biology. So as soon as we notice this, we find a way to get into their world until we see that gleam in their eye and then we do it over and over again.”

Therapeutic Listening (TL)

What is listening?
Listening is the process of detecting sound through our ears. The brain then organizes and integrates these sounds for use with information from all our other senses. Hearing is passive, but listening is an active process and demands attention and engagement. It is a continuous process, involving:
-
Orientating to sound – Do I hear something?
-
Locating sound – Where is the sound coming from so that I can focus on it?
-
Selecting sound, what is important to listen to – Is it an alarm or pupils in the playground?
-
Attending to sound for all information – What does the sound mean to me or my world, do I follow all the instructions or only parts?
-
Discriminating and interpreting sound – Should I respond to the sound? Am I in danger?
What is TL?
TL is an evidence-based auditory intervention intended to support individuals who experience challenges such as sensory processing, listening, attention, communication. Sound-based intervention is a powerful way to activate and access the nervous system as the auditory system is connected to all levels of brain leading to positive changes in function. The music is electronically modified to highlight the parts of the sound spectrum that naturally capture attention and activate body movement, synchronizing it with the environment.
TL activates listening:
-
Improve and/or develop the child’s ability to tune into and respond to their world
-
Gives the listener unique and precisely controlled sensory information to support regulation, engagement & participation
-
Helps to balance the ability to focus on a task whilst monitoring the environment

TL involves listening to specially recorded and enhanced music over specialist headphones.
